Below are the programs and workshops for 2012.   No programs/workshops are scheduled for October and December.   The October meeting is our annual potluck, and we do not meet in December.  To register for workshops listed below, contact  Jan Moore-Ecker  at jmebear@q.com.  All class registrations are considered TENTATIVE until payment is received.  Where applicable, please let Jan know if you will be purchasing a kit.

Lynn A Koos, Curator
African American Museum of Iowa
 
9 am and 7 pm Lectures
Lynn A. Koos, Curator at the African American Museum of Iowa will be presenting a trunk show containing some of the quilts which have been donated to the Museum by area African American families.  She'll be discussing some of each quilt's features as well as talking about the significance of the quilt to the Museum and how the quilts are cared for there.    Please join us!
 
Between meetings, you will be able to sew your own string quilt.   Judy Heilers, SOS, will help us learn this easy technique for quilt making.  She will supply the fabric and backing for sewing strips.  Please bring your machine, and make a small quilt which you can take home with you or donate to SOS.  Session begins at l:00 p.m.

Ellen Anne Eddy (Indiana)
 
9 am Lecture:   COLOR COOKBOOK APPROACH
A slide lecture offering a gentle and personal approach to color uses.   We'll discuss color choices from dye-pot to fabric selection to thread usage.   We'll also examine the effects top name quilters get through their color choices, and show you how to personalize color formulas to work for you.  Recommended for anyone wanting to expand their color vocabulary in their work.
 
7 pm Lecture:  VISUAL PATH
We explore the elements of design to make nature quilts that move and that move you.  The design concepts are easy to understand and so much fun!    You'll see how to build a path through your quilt that feeds the eye and the soul.   The lecture focuses on taking geometric forms, translating them to organic shapes and creating nature quilts that live, move and breathe.

You'll build fantastic landscapes in this class.  We all drool over the amazing brocades, tulles, organzas, hand-dyed cottons and lame's.  The question is, how do you use them?  In this class we'll use non-sewing applique to create the illusions of smoke, mist, water and fire; to add flora and fauna in fabrics you've only dreamed of using.   3 hour design-oriented class.

Annette and Carla from The Woolen Needle in Williamsburg, Iowa, will be doing a trunk show of both quilts and wool projects and telling the story of how they arrived at where they are today.

9 am and 7 pm Lectures:  THE RABBIT'S OUT OF THE TRUNK 
Judy’s life as a quilter, told thru her quilts.   She is a nationally known quilt teacher who lives near Sauk City, WI.  She’s been teaching in the Madison area almost 30 years.  Her focus is mainly on traditional quilt patterns and in teaching quilters “how to think”.  Judy’s quilts have been featured in national quilting magazines and she publishes her own patterns.

An original design by Judy, this project has a “Frank Lloyd Wright” prairie style look to it.   The blocks that make up the design are easy and do not require meticulous sewing or advanced skills; crooked seams can even add to the effect.  You can choose from lap, wallhanging or tablerunner for your project.   This quilt looks beautiful with batiks, but can be done with other fabrics as well.

NOTE:  this meeting is on Tuesday due to Memorial Day
 
9 am and 7 pm Lectures:  PAST TO THE PRESENT 
This program is a trunk show from 1981 up to the present.  Millie will show and discuss her award-winning quilts and wall hangings, her inspirations, designs, color choices and some funny and not-so-funny things that happened while making them.   Contains all kinds of techniques that she has used, both handwork and machine. Note:  There was an article in the AMERICAN QUILTER magazine, March 2011 issue on Millie Sorrells titled “Light on the Prairie”. ( Jan has a copy if anyone would like to read.)

We will be making a Baltimore Album style of block containing leaves, stuffed stems and a ruched flower.  She will also show us several other ideas using the ruching technique.

9 am Lecture:  SCRAP QUILTS
Lecture/trunk show giving the history of scrap quilts and examples of various types of scrap quilts.  Also included are how to organize your scraps and time-saving techniques.
 
 
7 pm Lecture:  SAMPLER QUILTS
Lecture/trunk show that contains the history of sampler quilts.  Quilts will be shown with different sashing and border options and various styles of work (ie.  traditional piecing, hand and machine applique, machine embroidery, paper piecing, etc.)

9 am Lecture:  FRIEDA’S FABRICS TO DYE FOR
Lecture and Powerpoint presentation will show us how she dyes her gorgeous hand-dyed fabric.  This is the step by step process of gradation dyeing from her new book, FABRIC TO DYE FOR.
 
7 pm Lecture:  FRIEDA’S FUN FAST FUSING
Lecture and Powerpoint presentation will walk us thru the process of making one of her fused quilts as well as showing us how her work has evolved.  Along with these lectures, Frieda will bring many of her quilts for display as well
as her patterns and fabrics for sale.

Using decorative rotary blades and fused hand-dyed fabric we will create a one of a kind LEAF quilt.  Frieda will show us ways to create strip units, leaves and stems to achieve our woodland wonders.

9 am Lecture:  FRAMED FABRIC LANDSCAPES & QUILT BLOCKS – IS IT FINE ART?
Being open to new methods and materials brings the “craft” of quilting to the “art” of fiber work.  Follow an artist’s journey to develop her art into fine art.  Where does framed fiber art fit?   Is it craft or is it fine art?  This is a slide show filled with information about Doris’ unusual techniques.  You will enjoy learning how a career in the arts finds a fit with home and family.
 
7 pm Lecture:  STARTING YOUR OWN HOME BUSINESS

Starting your own home business can be very challenging: but allows for growth at your own pace and flexibility in 

 

your daily schedule.  Follow along the sometimes humorous journey as Doris' part time cottage business has developed into a full time adventure with an exciting calendar of' events.  Topics include:  Is entrepreneurship right for you and your family, finding information and resources to start your own home business, establishing your workspace at home, what skills you will need, using the web to promote your business.  This is a slide show with time allowed for questions.

Add another dimension to your  creative quilt making with Shiva Oil Paintstiks.   Paintstiks are great for  embellishing quilts, garments, and home décor.  In this techniques class, you will learn how to create layers of color, design, and texture on fabric simply by rubbing, stenciling or masking out.  Doris will demonstrate and give tips on how to use paintstiks successfully.   Get inspired with wonderful samples!  You won’t believe how easy and fun paintstiks are.

9 am Lecture:  QUILTS WITH GREAT EDGES (trunk show) 
Kathy has a trunk show of 25 quilts with great edges.  They include antique and new quilts.  The history of edge treatments as well as helpful hints for making successful edges on your quilts are included in this lecture.  Members of the audience are encouraged to bring any quilts with great edges that they may have and Kathy will incorporate them into the lecture.
                                   
7 pm Lecture:  COLOR AND DESIGN FOR QUILT MAKERS 
As a teacher, appraiser, and quilt show judge, Kathy has studied color and design in quilts.  Her lecture will provide helpful information and tips for creating quilts with great colors and designs.

Don’t be intimidated by intricate Hawaiian appliqué blocks.   Kathy will show us how to design and make these using a raw-edge appliqué technique.  She will share her original patterns and provide hints for creating Hawaiian designs.  We will learn to fold and cut fusible paper to make our design.  It will be fused to the appliqué fabric and machine appliquéd to the background fabric.  Learn to maneuver inside and outside curves and points to create even machine applique stitches.  Borders may be added after class to make this project a wall hanging or pillow.    You will need your sewing machine for this class.

(Note:  this workshop will be held at the Guaranty Bank Building in Fairfax, IA)
Kathy Kansier’s most popular workshop.  We will learn a variety of techniques to complete the edges of our quilts.   We will make take-home samples including a double-fold binding with mitered corners and connected tails, rickrack binding, reversible binding, a fused binding, prairie points, scallops, piping and facings.  We will learn about the history of bindings, how to make self-bound edges, Amish bindings, when to use single-fold, double-fold, bias and straight binding and finish a binding with hand stitches.

9 am and 7 pm Lectures: LECTURE/TRUNK SHOW
Colleen will show progression of technique, style, and artistic insight from 1995 to now.  Quilts will be shown, and many will be passed around.  Slides will not be used.
 
Workshop  (1-4 pm):  MAKING FIBER BEADS 
In this workshop, we will learn how to use strips of fabric, yarns, beads, wire and cording to make fiber beads that can be used on quilt tops, garments, jewelry, purses, and anything else your heart desires.    You can make approximately 24 to 36 bead during the workshop..
